It is with great sadness and regret that we have made a decision today to keep the zoo closed throughout january 2021. After a meeting today with staff and family we have come to the decision based on two reasons.
First, that despite being an outdoors area, we are very concerned that by opening we will be encouraging people to travel and with infection rates still so high, we will be putting you, our customers, our staff and our animals at risk. This is something we can not warrant.
Second, as you will be aware, under the current guidelines we can only open up outside areas, which is great but with the constant rain and the last thing we need is you guys slopping around in mud. As it stands we will maintain all non-essential staff on furlough, but will remain under a lot of pressure to keep the animals warm and fed.
I will be honest this whole pandemic is gut wrenching on so many levels and the decision we have made will only cause the zoo more hardship but it is the right decision to make. I know that lots of you have offered donations and again it is so hard to have to go back to begging but we are left with no other choice. Nicky and Jenny are two fantastic friends of the zoo and have set up a go fund me page to help our rising and ongoing costs.
It’s tough but there is light at the end of the tunnel and we will all get there. It’s been a tough six years building the zoo and we won’t give up. We will look at February and see where we are then. Stay safe and we will see you all soon.
